MURFREESBORO – Jazz guitarist, Peter Bernstein, will headline the upcoming third concert in the four-concert series known as the MTSU Jazz Artist Series. Bernstein will perform alongside MTSU jazz faculty members at 7:30 pm, Feb. 1, in Hinton Music Hall of the Wright Music Building on the MTSU campus.
“We’re thrilled to have such a multi-talented artist to perform for this special concert”, said Jamey Simmons, Director of Jazz Studies at MTSU.
“Not only will the concert showcase Bernstein’s playing and compositional abilities but he will also share with us (during his visit) his gifts as a renowned educator,” said Simmons.
Simmons said this referring to a free 11:30 am jazz clinic on Feb. 1 in Saunders Fine Arts room 101 on the MTSU campus.
Recognized as one of the leading guitarists of his generation, Bernstein has been a part of the jazz scene internationally since 1989. As a veteran side musician, he has participated in 80 recording projects.
Bernstein has released nine albums as a bandleader, and a DVD, Live at Smoke. In 1990 saxophone legend, Lou Donaldson, took him on as a regular member of his working group throughout the decade.
“Some people just have it,” Donaldson said. “Most of the time you have to teach people what to do, but Peter knows it all.”
Tickets for the Feb. 1 concert are $10 for the public and free for MTSU students, faculty and staff. Discounts for area band students and educators are also available.
To reserve advanced tickets call (615) 898-2724 or email James.Simmons@mtsu.edu. Tickets may also be purchased at the door.
The fourth and final concert in the MTSU Jazz Artist Series on March 1 will feature jazz drummer Matt Wilson and guitarist Gary Wittner, Jazz Ensemble I and the MTSU Faculty Jazztet.
