This year’s keynote speaker for Scholars Week is Lecia Brooks, Director of Outreach and the “Teaching Tolerance” project for the Southern Poverty Law Center.
Ms. Brooks has been very busy lately, speaking most recently to the faculty and staff at UT-Knoxville as they organized in response to a planned lecture series by white nationalist and co-founder of the Traditionalist Worker Party, Matthew Heimbach.
Our campus (as well as the city of Murfreesboro) has also been a target of white nationalist groups. As reported in the Chronicle of Higher Education (Feb 1 2018), “White-supremacist propaganda at colleges increased by 258 percent from the fall of 2016 to the fall of 2017, affecting 216 campuses across the nation, according to a study released [in January] by the Anti-Defamation League.”
Ms. Brooks will be on campus and available to meet with faculty and students from 12 noon on Wednesday, March 21st to 12 noon on Thursday, March 22nd.
If you’re interested in having Ms. Brooks speak to your class and/or with a student group, please contact Laura.Dubek@mtsu.edu.
